Restoring Antiques
We’ve undertaken remarkable projects that demanded a great deal of care and meticulous craftsmanship.
One of our memorable endeavors involved the restoration of an old antique dresser with a mirror, entrusted to us by a delightful lady with a deep fondness for her cherished piece. She presented us with the dresser was disassembled and stored in her basement, we embarked on the task of reconstructing and refinishing it to the colour of her choice. While she acknowledged its age, she wasn’t certain about its exact antiquity. To our surprise, during the restoration process, we uncovered old newspapers behind the mirror that traced back to the year 1896.
Every element of this project was entirely custom, meticulously rebuilt by our master craftsman, Errol. His skillful hands and attention to detail allowed him to bring the dresser back to life according to the lady’s vision, creating a stunning restoration that surpassed her expectations.
“I am so thankful that I found Grain Refinishing – Errol and Wynton.
They took the many wooden bits and pieces that I had from my grandmother’s dresser and turned it back into the beautiful piece of furniture that I now use to store my clothes in. I get to see the magic that they did everyday!
A bit of the background is, I had the pieces of the dresser with me for about 25 years. I had to take it apart to move it from my mother’s home in another city to my home. For the first 20 years I stored it in a barn and then in a cellar – not the most ideal conditions.
The time finally came when I wanted to use the dresser and started searching for someone to put it back together.
I started communicating with them before Christmas, at a time they were very busy, but they were always very patient and answered every question I had.
Finally after Christmas I took my treasured bits and pieces to them, again we had lots of conversations and I was shown some of the work they had completed. Errol explained the wood in the dresser was from around 1880, he even explained how they would cut trees back in that time. There was never any doubt that I was with the right people.
Behind the mirror they found an old news paper dating from February 1896 and Wynton sent me photos. My instruction was to leave the paper where it was found so it is still part of the history of the dresser. That’s how caring they both are.
Errol is a master furniture re-finisher and Wynton is the business man. I tend to ramble on when talking so every time after I left their shop I would get an email to verify every bit of the conversation we had.
They are both excellent at what they do in their business and there was never a moment that I doubted my decision of hiring them.
You will never regret trusting them with your treasures, they are both awesome, patient and very knowledgeable people.”
